How should a GLP-1 telehealth brand do email and SMS?
Split the work into two lanes. Lifecycle marketing promotes the program and membership from a marketing platform that never holds health data. Clinical messages like dosing, side effects, labs and prescription status come from your HIPAA-covered system. Then choose a platform whose policy allows your category. Klaviyo's does not.
What the rules say now
The two-lane patient journey
Every stage of the journey has a marketing job and a clinical job. Keeping them in separate systems protects patients and protects your accounts. It also makes it obvious which message belongs where.
What we build for telehealth programs
Telehealth retention isn’t cart abandonment with a medical logo. The revenue sits in intake completion, a strong first month and continuation, and all three depend on trust.
- Lead nurture: education, eligibility and what to expect, with no outcome promises
- Intake completion: reminders tied to where the person stopped, not what they disclosed
- Onboarding: how the membership, the care team and the app work
- Engagement: habits, community and value content that supports the program
- Renewal: clear membership reminders and easy self-service
- Save and win-back: bring people back to care, never to a discounted drug
- Paid media alignment, so ads, landing pages and messages say the same compliant thing
How we keep it by the book
On March 3, 2026, FDA announced 30 warning letters to telehealth companies. The letters objected to marketing that implied compounded GLP-1s were equivalent to, or approved like, FDA-approved drugs, including ‘generic’ and brand-name comparisons. They also objected to branding that obscured who actually compounded the product. That’s the line our copy is written to.
- No copy that implies a compounded product is the same as, or a generic of, an FDA-approved one
- No discounts or ‘offers’ on the prescription; we promote the care service and membership
- No protected health information in marketing tools: no diagnoses, doses, labs or medications
- Clinical questions routed to your care team’s HIPAA-covered channel
- Outcome claims substantiated and approved by your medical and legal reviewers before anything sends
- SMS sent only with documented TCPA consent, during quiet-hour-safe windows
- We design so marketing tools never hold PHI, which keeps the HIPAA footprint small
Why most telehealth brands can't stay on Klaviyo
We’re a Klaviyo Master Platinum agency, so we say this with some authority. Klaviyo’s current acceptable use policy (updated April 9, 2026) prohibits using the platform to offer products or services related to prescription medications, medical therapies or telehealth. If your program runs on Klaviyo today, plan the move before your account is reviewed, not after.
Customer.io’s policy doesn’t list telehealth as a prohibited category. It does prohibit U.S. offers for prescription medication and PHI in messages, so we build programs that stay inside those limits. Confirm your specific use case with Customer.io before you migrate. Read the full comparison in our platform guide.
What we measure
Open rates don’t tell you whether patients stayed in care. We report on the numbers your finance team uses:
- Intake completion rate
- First-renewal rate
- Continuation at 3 and 6 months
- Patient lifetime value and CAC payback
- Save and win-back recovery, measured against a holdout
Every result we publish shows its baseline, timeframe and method.
